Make Your Voice Count: Why Voting Matters for Small Businesses in This Year’s Election
Authored by Chris Austin, President of Ardiah
As Election Day approaches, it’s time for small-business owners and supporters to reflect on what’s at stake. Voting isn’t just a civic duty; for us in the small-business community, it’s a powerful way to impact the policies and regulations that shape our industry’s future. From tax reforms to healthcare policies, and economic programs, the outcome of this year’s election can directly influence small businesses and our communities.
The Small-Business Impact
Small businesses are vital to the U.S. economy. They employ over 60 million Americans and create nearly two-thirds of new jobs annually. Yet, according to the National Small Business Association (NSBA), challenges such as rising healthcare costs, burdensome tax regulations, and difficulty accessing capital continue to hinder small-business growth. The NSBA advocates for policies that will ease these burdens and promote a more supportive environment for small businesses. By voting, we help bring these priorities to the attention of policymakers.
Data Shows the Need for Pro-Small Business Policies
According to the NSBA, the U.S. ranks 4th globally in ease of doing business, yet we fall to 20th in ease of starting a business and 64th in dealing with and paying taxes. These rankings underscore a significant gap in how small businesses are supported compared to other countries. This year’s election presents an opportunity to address these challenges by supporting candidates and policies that prioritize small-business needs.
Key Issues for Small Businesses
Several issues on the ballot this year have far-reaching impacts on small businesses. Here are a few of the key areas to keep an eye on:
-
Healthcare Costs: Rising healthcare costs continue to strain small businesses and their employees. Legislative changes could help reduce premiums and improve access to affordable coverage.
-
Tax Reform: Small-business owners spend substantial time and resources navigating complex tax regulations. Simplifying the tax code and reducing unnecessary burdens can allow us to reinvest in our businesses and communities.
-
Access to Capital: Small businesses often struggle to secure affordable financing. Policies that increase funding for Small Business Administration (SBA) loans or encourage local investment could make a substantial difference.
-
Labor and Employment Regulations: Changes in labor laws, from minimum wage adjustments to workplace safety requirements, directly impact small-business operations. Ensuring these laws are balanced and fair is essential for the sustainability of small businesses.
NSBA’s Vision and the Role of Small-Business Voters
The NSBA’s vision centers on a nation where small businesses operate freely and fairly, without excessive government interference. But making this vision a reality depends on active participation from small-business owners and employees alike. According to NSBA data, small businesses and their employees represent one-third of the voting population, with 70 million potential voters. However, 82% of small-business owners do not vote along strict party lines, making the small-business vote one of the most diverse and independent segments in the country.
This year, let’s use our collective voice to hold elected officials accountable and advocate for policies that support small businesses. A vote for small business is a vote for economic resilience, job creation, and a thriving local economy.

Closing Thoughts
Small businesses are the backbone of our nation, yet we often face challenges that make it hard to succeed. This election is a chance for each of us to advocate for policies that truly support small businesses and ensure that our voices are heard in Washington. By voting, we show our commitment to the future of small businesses and the communities we serve.
Let’s make a difference this Election Day. Cast your vote, and together, let’s work toward a brighter future for small businesses.
