Why Another Ribbon Cutting Matters — Celebrating Change, Connection, and the Blessing of a New Chapter

Why Another Ribbon Cutting Matters – Celebrating Change, Connection, and the Blessing of a New Chapter.

By Chris Austin, President of Ardiah

Last week, I wrote about something that most small business owners feel but rarely say out loud… loneliness. That quiet isolation that creeps in when you’re doing everything you can to keep the business going, to show up for your clients, and to lead through seasons of change. It hit a nerve because it’s real. I’ve felt it. And it’s why I believe events, gatherings, and even “just another ribbon cutting” still matter.

On August 1st, we moved into our new office at 12 Water Street, Suite 235… in the old MBNA/Boston Financial building right in Rockland. It’s smaller than our last office, more focused, and filled with gratitude. Last week, we hosted Rockland Main Street’s Morning on Main here in our new space. It was a full circle moment. After everything we’ve walked through over the past few years, standing in a room filled with people… shaking hands, sharing coffee, swapping stories… it meant more than I can put into words. And it reminded me why connecting matters. Why community matters. Why showing up — even when your story has changed — is more important than ever.

What made that moment even more powerful is this… the office I now sit in once belonged to a mentor of mine, 25 years ago when I worked at MBNA. I was mentored in this exact space, and now, all these years later, I’m sitting at that same desk, in that same room, but this time as a business owner. It brought back a quote that was shared with us on day one of MBNA training, back on October 15th, 1999… “Always look forward to the opportunities that come with change.” I didn’t realize how true that would be until now.

This Friday, September 19th at 9am, we’re inviting everyone to join us again… for our Ribbon Cutting and Open House. Now, I know what some people might be thinking — “Another ribbon cutting?” “Didn’t Ardiah already do this?” And yeah, we’ve had a few over the years. But here’s the thing… this one isn’t about growth in size. It’s about growth in clarity. It’s about recognizing that we made it through a hard season, and came out stronger, leaner, and more committed to what we do best — Payroll and Payment Solutions for Maine businesses.

Yes, our team is smaller. Yes, our office is smaller. But our mission is sharper than ever. We’re now a family-owned business. We’re focused on just two service lines that we know we can scale with excellence. And we’re doing it with the kind of heart and hustle that only comes from surviving the tough stuff.

That’s why we’re celebrating. That’s why we keep opening our doors. Not because it’s a photo op. Not because it’s “new” news. But because networking… storytelling… and community engagement are essential for small business owners. Especially after what so many of us have walked through these past few years.

Too many people wait to celebrate. They wait for everything to be “just right”… the perfect office, the perfect moment, the perfect headline. But here’s what I’ve learned — if you’re standing, if you’ve survived, if you’re still showing up… you already have something worth celebrating.

I want to encourage every business owner reading this to stop playing small with your story. Host something. Show up for something. Tell people what you’ve been through. Be proud of the fact that you’re still in the game, even if the team, space, or structure looks different than it did a few years ago. Because guess what? You’re not alone. And you might just be the connection someone else needs.

So this Friday, come celebrate with us. Bring a friend, grab a coffee, meet some people, and see the space. It’s not about how big it is — it’s about how far we’ve come. And we’re just getting started.
